Amber and Henry Mommy and Me Session | Mill Race Park | Family Photographer In Columbus, Indiana
I want to share a heartwarming experience from a recent mother and son photo session I had with Amber and her adorable little Henry. Henry is autistic and is non-verbal.
Mill Race Park Mommy and Me Photography Session
If you you have been following me for a while you know that my son is autistic as well. So photographing children like Henry and my son holds a special place in my heart.
I have firsthand experience in working with children on the spectrum and truly understand the unique challenges and joys that come with it. That's one of the reasons why I offer sessions specifically designed for families with special needs – because I want to create a safe and comfortable space for everyone involved.
I remember being hesitant and afraid to have my son's pictures taken by a photographer, not knowing how they would handle him or if they would truly understand. One of my biggest fears would be that my son would have a meltdown in the middle of the shoot. Sadly, this fear held me back, and I don't have many photos of me and my son when he was younger. I don’t want this for you or anyone that you may know that has special little ones in their families.
We started this mommy and me session at Mill Race Park in Columbus, Indiana. Oftentimes I will start off at Mill Race Park for my shoots unless there is another location that my client wants. For this shoot I consciously chose this location because I wanted a serene and peaceful environment for Henry. I wanted the least amount of sensory overload for him.
We only stuck to a few spots at the park. Simple is better here.
I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity to photograph families like Amber and Henry's. It's a reminder of the importance of inclusivity in the world of photography. Every family deserves to have beautiful, meaningful images that celebrate their unique journey, regardless of any challenges they may face.
So, if you or someone you know is hesitant about getting photos taken because of special needs, rest assured that I'm here to provide a safe, understanding, and joyful experience. Together, let's capture these unforgettable moments. You have a right to them.
Until next time,
Stefanie
